This weekend my partner Susan is walk 100km, with her friend, to raise money for London Air Ambulance.
Susan's thoughts about walk 100km, continuously overnight
- I completed it
- This definitely wouldn't have happened without my favourite former Councillor challenge walk pal, Rita or my wonderful Dave as non-participatory co-walker and cheer leader
Some stats: over 2 days of the challenge
- 0 hours sleep
- 8072 calories burned
- 178303 steps walked
- Pace dropped from just under 5km an hour to a 3km an hour hobble for last 50km
- Collected around 5 blisters.
- 153 people, some younger than me, did not make it to the end
Some Reflections
- You can have too much Thames Path
- Walking over 50km takes up far too much time, both in training and in life.
- I will never put my body through anything so extreme again - and that includes the organisers' plans to up the ante with a 100 mile challenge next year (Just stop!)
- Having the chance to also show my support for the RNLI in such an appalling week, buying a cap from a random fete stall we walked past, was a boon
- I completed the walk as a well-nourished adult, used to walking distances of 10-50km with one backpack - what must it be like to be a displaced person forced to walk from one end of your state to the other with elderly, sick or young family members and belongings?
- I
am so close tohave raised over £2000, so far, in my fundraising for the amazing London Air Ambulance - and there is still time to donate as pages stay open for weeks after the race. So here is my link.

London Air Ambulance
Susan says:
The London Air Ambulance is a fantastic local resource that does great work flying medical practitioners in to accident scenes and casualties out. Sometimes landing as nearby as our local park. To recognise this, I am hoping to improve on my longest walks to date and complete the ultra demanding 100km Thames Path route, walking through the night - any support welcomed
